A New Beginning [Hardcover]
Buyer Reviews
i enjoy the wendy pfeffer books! we are a secular family members searching to expose our children to several belief systems, but with no indoctrinating them. these books give broad, general knowledge about the customs in other nations, and offers some historical time frames to create greater understanding. i have donated all her books to our school library, and hope she is organizing to write a book for summer solstice as properly.
Spring has arrived and the countryside is coming to life again. The leaves have begun to bud, the flowers are sprouting, "woodchucks whistle, chickadees chirp and dragonflies emerge from rivers and ponds." Robins come back to start out new households, new animals are getting born and many people commence planting their gardens. It is a time when a large number of distinctive cultures celebrate the new starting of the year. It is the spring equinox.
This book describes what the spring (vernal) equinox, the summer solstice, the fall(autumnal equinox) and the winter solstice are. In distinct, it celebrates the spring equinox, a time of new beginnings, with the reader and talks about celebrations around the globe to usher in this season. It talks about the Chinese New Year, the Persian No Ruz (New Year), the Indian celebration of Holi, the Mayan El Castillo pyramid, Maslenitsa (Pancake Week) in Russia, how the Cree Native American's honor the Great Spirit, Jewish Passover, the German festival Eostre (later changed to Easter) and the many techniques ordinary households celebrate spring. Does your family have one thing unique they do upon its arrival?
This book is quite nicely written and researched and the lively art function, like the springtime equinox, tends to make it come alive. The text moves from culture to culture with ease and every celebration has just sufficient factual material to make the reader want to study even more. If you want a book for your homeschool or classroom shelves on a wide variety of cultural celebrations of spring's new beginnings, this is a wonderful a single. In the back of the book there is a even more in depth explanation of the seasons. Also included are various fascinating crafts and recipes to try with your kids or students. Mmmm, those mashed potato Easter eggs sound decent!
